 UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Food Price (FPI), rose in may at their fastest monthly rate in a decade  even as world cereal production is on course to reach a new record high.


FPI , released by food and agriculture Organization (FAO) is a measure of the monthly change in international prices of basket of food commodities. 
It consists of the average of five commodity group price indices- cereals, oilseeds, dairy ,meet and sugar, weighted with the average export of each of the groups.
  • Reasons Underscoring such inflation includes
  • Renewed demand in some countries and a backlog of low production.
  • Market and supply disruption due to restriction on movement have created local shortages and higher prices.


IMPACT 

  1. Higher inflation will hit poorer countries reliant on imports for staple goods.
  1. MNC giants such as Nestle and Coca-Cola could pass on increased prices of raw martials to consumers.


INFLATION 

  • It measures the average price change in a basket of commodities and services over time .

  • Inflation is indicative of the decrease in the purchasing power of currency resulting in higher cost of living. This ultimately to a deceleration in economic growth.

  • However a certain level of inflation is required in the economy to ensure that expenditure is promoted and hoarding money through savings is demotivated.


 

WHO calls for efforts to prevent food born diseases (FBD)

Why in the News :

    • World food safety Day June 7, WHO South East Asia region has called for an intensified whole of society effort to prevent, and manage the risk of FBD, Which affects 600 million people globally.
    • The region contributes a quarter of the global burden of FBD morbidity and nearly 42% of FBD mortality.
    • FBD are costing India almost 15 billon USD annually.

FBD CAUSES :

  • FBD are caused by contamination of food and occur at any , stage of  any stage of the food production , delivery and consumption chain. 
  • Factors responsible for FBD include environmental contamination , unsafe food starge and processing complex food chain etc.



FBD encompass a wide range of ilnesses from diarrhoea to cancers.


CLASSIFICATION OF FBD : 

 

 

 

Food- born infections - 

caused by consuming foods or liquids contaminated with bacteria, viruses ,or parasites. These pathogens cause infection by :

      • Invading and multiplying in the lining of the intestines and /or other tissue.
      • Invading and multiplying in the intestinal tract and releasing a toxin .

 

 

Food-borne intoxications -  

caused by consuming foods or  behverages  already contaminated with a toxin.


Sources of toxins are as follows:

    • Certain bacteria (per-formed toxins)
    • Poisonous chemicals
    • Natural toxins found in animals, plants ,and fungi.
